We arrived early to get our tent set up before the BBQ grilling got underway. We had borrowed MarGene's tent that was "easy" to set up. I have never set up a tent so I was really just there for moral support. We got something criss crossed and this dang tent was not coming together. We had to take it all down and start over while another ward member read out the instructions. This "easy" tent took us an hour to get put up. Once we figured out the main triangle it all came together. What a mess that was.
We then head over to help get the grilling going to find no grills. No one had checked the shed to make sure we had propane or to check to make sure it was all set to go. We had to quickly pull something together. Jeff did bring our skillet as a plan F backup. Good thing he did and he knows how to cook. That grill only fits 6 patties and we had 80 to cook. Let's just say it was slow in coming but the food did get cooked with the help of several more people and the kitchen stoves.
I think this should have been a huge red flag to us. Things were not going so smooth for this night. We had a total of 3 families us included camping. Hey people this is a Ward Camp out where was everyone??? We did have one other new family to the ward join us later. So 4 total families. We had no wood and no fire. Really people who is in charge of this event?? Luckily again as we were in the kitchen making smores over the stove another ward member brought us his fire pit and a handful of wood.
So we now had fire and 4 tents going. It was super fun with this cozy little group. We told stories and sang some fun camp songs. It was nice to get to know the new family and just have fun. My kids just loved the whole experience. Around 11:30ish it was time for bed. We all began to get ourselves ready for bed and cozy in our sleeping bags. Just when eyes were shut and we were ready to drift off to sleep we heard this strange swish sounds.
After peeking out the tent window we see the sprinklers going right behind us. At this point it was too late to do anything. We were staked down and soon flooded with sprinkler water. Our poor tent got the main hit while the one next to us got a few sprinkles and the other 2 were untouched. We had to quickly call it a night as we were wet and not sleeping there. That caused a domino effect as the rest of the families packed up as well. They feared that wasn't the last of the sprinklers. We all had a good laugh as we scurried to leave. We have some great memories and a very interesting story to tell. Never again camp in the meadow behind the church unless you are sure it is planned right and no sprinklers will get you. Good grief people what a bad planning from top to bottom. Live and learn I guess. It was still fun and I do smile every time I think of this past weekend. Crazy....
